What Should I See Tonight, Dan (4/18/09)

Well, there’s actually a number of options this week.

Probably the safest bet according to Rottentomatoes is State of Play, starring Maximus himself, Russell Crowe.

The film is currently at 81% on Rottentomatoes, a pretty high mark. My colleague Thomas Floyd felt like it had a huge plot hole (which it sounded to me like he was right about) but that didn’t seem to bother most critics.

You could also see 17 Again, which is just barely “fresh” at 61% on Rottentomatoes, albeit that’s a high score for what seemed a pretty formulaic retooling of an old concept, with Zac Efron in the lead. Date night and teenage girls will probably make up the crowd there.

Then there’s Crank 2, which frankly I’m a little upset even exists as I loved the ending of the original which apparently I misunderstood given there’s a sequel…but I digress. Variety’s review basically said this movie values vulgarity more than humor (as opposed to the first one), which doesn’t sound like a winning formula to me. But it actually has a 69% score on Rottentomatoes, though with not that many reviews in.

Also if you can find it in your area you should totally see American Violet, a deeply moving indie which is also very entertaining (it’s at 69% on R.T. as well).
